En janvier 1959, le Soudan français (actuel Mali) et le Sénégal forment la Fédération du Mali, dont le drapeau tricolore vert, jaune, rouge porte une silhouette humaine stylisée, le kanaga, en son centre.
Le 20 août 1960, le Sénégal se retire et proclame son indépendance. Il conserve le drapeau de la Fédération du Mali, le kanaga est remplacé par l’étoile verte. Symbole d’indépendance nationale, le drapeau traduit la solidarité étroite de toutes les ethnies et confessions religieuses représentées dans le pays.
All the symbolism is put at the service of unity, each color refers to a meaning in which the citizen can recognize himself. Green represents the favorite color of the Prophet for Muslims, hope for Christians or fertility for animists. Yellow symbolizes wealth, the fruit of work, but also spiritual and intellectual vocation, the arts, letters, the spirit. Red is the color of courage, of sacrifice by the entire nation and the fight against underdevelopment. The star is a sign of openness towards the five continents, its green color evokes the hope of the young independence of the Republic of Senegal.
