Placed under British mandate since 1892, seven emirates located in the Persian Gulf, along the Pirate Coast – Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaima, Sharjah and Umm al-Qaiwain – united into a state federal in 1971, the capital of which is Abu Dhabi.
The flag of the United Arab Emirates was adopted on December 2, 1971, but each emirate continues to use its own banner. White and red were already present on the flag of each of these emirates, these colors having been assigned by Great Britain to the states of the Persian Gulf in the 19th century. In addition to white and red, it also includes green and black, which are among the emblematic colors of pan-Arabism, a movement to which the new federation immediately adhered.
Black symbolizes the country's oil wealth. White, state neutrality. The green, the fertility of the country.
Red, state unity.
These colors are inspired by a verse by Safiy-eddine Al-Hali: “White are our blessings, black are our battles, green are our pastures, red are our swords. »
