The current flag dates from 1917, when King Rama VI ordered it to be changed so that it was in harmony with the flags of the allied countries (France and England).
He decreed that it would have three colors arranged in bands of red, white, blue.
Since the golden age of Ayutthaya (1590-1605), Thailand used a red flag to which the image of a white elephant in the wheel of Vishnu was added in the center. White elephants were seen as an extremely auspicious sign for the nation.
According to legend, on September 12, 1916, King Rama VI, traveling in the north, noticed that the flag had been raised upside down, presenting the elephant with its legs in the air, lying on its back. To prevent this from happening again, he decided it was best to remove the elephant from the flag.
Blue, the traditional color of the country, represents the king, head of the country, white represents faith and purity, red the patriotic struggle and solidarity between Thais.
