In January 1959, French Sudan (now Mali) and Senegal formed the Mali Federation, whose green, yellow and red tricolor flag bears a stylized human silhouette, the kanaga, in its center.
On August 20, 1960, Senegal withdrew and proclaimed its independence. It retains the flag of the Mali Federation, the kanaga is replaced by the green star. A symbol of national independence, the flag reflects the close solidarity of all ethnic groups and religious confessions represented in the country.
All the symbolism is put at the service of unity, each color refers to a meaning in which the citizen can recognize himself. Green represents the favorite color of the Prophet for Muslims, hope for Christians or fertility for animists. Yellow symbolizes wealth, the fruit of work, but also spiritual and intellectual vocation, the arts, letters, the spirit. Red is the color of courage, of sacrifice by the entire nation and the fight against underdevelopment. The star is a sign of openness towards the five continents, its green color evokes the hope of the young independence of the Republic of Senegal.
